Julie Richardson’s life changed dramatically after meeting Walter, a treasure-diver and mariner. The two fell in love and married three years later. Her compelling story unfolds as she and Walter embark on several ocean voyages with their young sons, facing storms, excitement, beauty, and extreme crises with their children. Julie narrates her family’s journey through the lens of the ocean in all its majestic glory.
This close-knit family has navigated the waters of Alaska, the Bahamas, the Okeechobee Waterway, the Florida Keys, Miami, the Ten Thousand Islands, the Eastern Seaboard, the Amazon River, and the Caribbean Sea.
Julie is the Founder and President of DiveWise, a non-profit organization that seeks to further freedive safety education and awareness. A popular public speaker and published writer, Julie speaks passionately about topics related to freediving safety.
Her work has been instrumental in the establishment of Australia’s Spear Safe program, a national initiative to improve safety for spearfishers, and she is the recipient of the 2010 National Award from the National Water Safety Congress for her work in promoting water safety.
Julie has been featured on National Public Radio, the Weather Channel’s “Freaks of Nature,” SpearDivers TV and CBS 4 Feature News, which received an Emmy nomination in 2013. Her articles have been published in Spearing Magazine, Fish Monster and the Triton Newspaper in the United States and internationally in Dive Pacific, New Zealand Spearo, eBlue, Deep Magazine, Deep Worldwide, as well as International Freediving and Spearfishing News.
